In a world often consumed by self-interest and personal gain, it is refreshing to discover the timeless wisdom that lies within ancient texts. James 4:6 serves as a poignant reminder of the power and significance of serving with humility and courage. These virtues, when embraced, have the potential to bring about profound transformations in our lives as individuals and as leaders. In this blog, we will delve into the depths of what it truly means to serve with humility and courage.
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble”
James 4:6
God is in charge. You are not. For some, that’s a tough pill to swallow. While for others, it becomes an excuse.
It’s a tough pill to swallow for those who are self-sufficient problem solvers. I like self-sufficient problem solvers until they make it clear by their words and behaviors that they don’t need anyone and they always know best. They are the “smartest person in the room” types.
But “God is in charge” becomes an excuse for others who throw their arms up in the air, abdicating any personal responsibility, effort, or sacrifice. They are the fatalists, the “It is what it is” types. Realizing we have limitations is a good thing until it causes us to shrink back from what the Creator has empowered us to be and do.
Thus, what we need from leaders today is a little more theology in their psychology. What we need is serving with humility and courage. If you add humility and courage together, you get wisdom.
Humility
- Humility is an expression of temperance. It is a posture of learning and a willingness to truly listen, grow, and serve.
Courage
- Courage is the character to do the right thing even if it comes at a high and personal cost.
Wisdom
- Wisdom is the sum of humility and courage. It is the practical and effective application of timing, tone, and tactics.
But it all starts with authentic humility. So let me leave you with this thought: Scripture teaches that it is our job to humble ourselves. However, if we don’t do it, someone or something else will do it for us, sooner or later.
“Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Then, lay first the foundation of humility.”
-Saint Augustine
