If you’ve never experienced frustration by falling short of your goals, you don’t need to read this. If you’ve never experienced disappointment with your team’s performance, you don’t need to read this. For the rest of us, consider what has worked for me, maybe it will work for you.
Stubborn Strategy
I liken a stubborn strategy to a tug-o-war. If the participants really want to win, you’ll see them encourage one another. You’ll hear one or two give short motivational speeches. They will organize themselves from the front to the back and everyone in between. If even the smallest or weakest person quits, it can spell disaster. Each team member digs their feet in trying to create a secure foothold. This feat may cost them a rope burn, a skinned-up knee, or a muscle cramp. But they will not give an inch until finally, they pull the opposing team across the mud puddle. Shouts of victory, hugs, and high-fives all around!
Forget What You’ve Been Doing
I’m extremely stubborn about winning but I no longer bog myself down with multiple goals. At any given time, I have one goal. I don’t have two or three or ten. ONE.
My team has one goal. And we are stubborn about it.
ONE GOAL
- Works when you or the team have done the hard work identifying your closely held values and your ultimate purpose. This is what gathers a group together in the first place. Shared values and purpose.
- Works because it removes competing priorities – confusion, preferences, etc. If what you are doing does not align with achieving one goal, it’s the wrong activity.
- Works because it’s easier to keep score. I’m amazed at how many metrics and complicated evaluation tools are being looked at while not directly related to the ONE-MAIN GOAL.
- Works because it is agile. If the team needs better focus, you translate the goal into terms like Today, This Week, This Month, This Quarter, etc.
- Works because many other building block goals are naturally achieved on the way to the ultimate summit.
- Works because it provides the power of focus. Like a magnifying glass that can concentrate the power of the sun and burn a dried leaf, so does a person or team when they possess an intense focus.
THE PROPOSITION: Identifying and prioritizing your main goal
Here’s what I say to myself… Yes, I would like to do this and I would like to do that. I’d like to improve here and there. I’d like us to be better at this and better at that. But if nothing else gets done… if nothing else is achieved… THIS IS WHAT I/WE MUST ACCOMPLISH!
Here’s what you’ll experience. Picking that one goal is much more difficult than you think. But if you identify the right goal. The one you really want to achieve, you will be successful more than you thought possible AND you will be amazed at what is accomplished along the way.
