I’ve done some pretty dumb things in my life. How about you?
If I’m honest, most of my greatest “what was I thinking?” moments all trace back to one thing: hurry.
- The time I backed into my wife’s car—in our own driveway. (Yes, we’re still married.)
- The time I drove off with important items still on top of my car… you could follow the trail like breadcrumbs.
- The time I made an expensive purchase I later regretted… because panic-buying is always wise.
- The many times I opened my mouth when silence would have been golden.
Hurry makes otherwise sane adults act like contestants on a bad reality show.
The Better Way
Psalm 46:10 offers the antidote: “Be still and know that I am God.”
- Your soul is the command center—what you think, feel, and do.
- Your body animates whatever’s happening in your soul (hence the chaos when your soul is in chaos).
- Your spirit is God’s very breath keeping it all alive.
When God says be still, He’s really saying: “Stop the circus. Let Me run the show for a while.”
Redline Living
Too many of us live like the gas pedal is pressed to the floor.
- A hurried life is fueled by adrenaline.
- A healthy life is paced—with reflection, prayer, and maybe even some intentional breathing.
Think golf swing: slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Force it, and the ball is headed for the next county.
The hurried life? It’s the chicken-with-his-head-cut-off routine. Lots of feathers. No future.
What Hurry Makes Us Miss
I once stood inches away from Dr. Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ (actually ate in his home and at his table as a teenager) and Dr. Henry Blackaby—two giants of faith—and didn’t even know it.
Same thing with two of my childhood sports heroes.
I was right there… completely clueless.
That’s what hurry does. You can be in the presence and still not be aware.
Signs of a Hurried Life
- Confusing busyness with progress.
- Misplacing stuff, canceling plans.
- Saying things that deserve an instant rewind button.
- Judging too fast, listening too little.
- Becoming your own counsel—because clearly, you “already know.”
Signs of a Still Life
- Prayer instead of panic.
- Reflection instead of reaction.
- Space instead of chaos.
- Serving instead of scrambling.
- One person, one task, one God at a time.
- A body that animates peace instead of panic.
The Invitation
Here’s the irony: slowing down doesn’t make you fall behind—it moves you forward.
So… be still. Breathe deep. Know that He is God.
That’s leadership with its head on straight.
With you in the slow lane (where the real life happens),
Jim
