Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.
– The Apostle Paul
If you read and if you listen closely to the voices around you, truth and goodness cut through all the noise. You can hear hundreds of ideas expressed within an hour of one day but when you hear something good and something right, it rings like a bell.
That’s exactly my experience when I read the quote above.
I recognize business excellence when I see it. It’s difficult to miss because most experiences are average or below average. The business, ministry, or person who delivers excellence does not need to be concerned about competition. There is very little competition for those who embrace being the best they can be. It’s not just a slogan. It’s a deeply held conviction, a work ethic, a sense of self-respect. Frankly, it’s the stuff of winners.
How we view others and how we treat them is the foundation of excellence. It’s the secret sauce. It’s not complicated. You ask yourself, “What do people need? What do they appreciate? What are they looking for?”
Here’s a down-to-earth example. While on a road trip from northern Colorado heading west to visit family, I could not help but notice several large billboards advertising something I had never seen before.
CLEAN RESTROOMS GUARANTEED
Absolutely brilliant! Who talks about restrooms? Everybody does. But what business owner sees it as a strategic advantage? Not many.
As we pulled into the retail rest stop, we found a well-kept presentation from the outside all the way into the restrooms. The money invested in the restrooms was something I had never seen before. The restrooms were 10x larger than the largest I have ever seen. They were modern and up-to-date. They were clean and were being cleaned in real time.
On your way out from the restroom, you could not help but notice the attractive and vast square footage offering fresh sandwiches, hot made-to-order entrees, beverages, ice cream, and interesting merchandise from clothing to home decor. The place was landscaped and neatly maintained. It was so delightful, it caused you to pause and stay awhile before refueling and hitting the road.
Everything about this stop was an elevated experience. But the secret sauce was simply recognizing basic human needs. And when you meet those needs, people might hang around a little longer.
