Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life.
Proverbs 1:19, NLT

I know people who are really good at making money, I know generous people, I know frugal people. I know greedy people and I bet you do too. Making money is a skill. In some cases, it seems to be a talent. Generosity is the same. Some have developed it through discipline and principle. Some have a gift of giving. Frugality is sometimes wise and sometimes foolish. Many spend too much and some miss out on profit because of it.

Greed on the other hand is something completely different. Greed is the source of excessive debt. We want more than we can afford and the thirst just cannot be quenched. Greed hordes money and resources even when releasing it can help so many people. It loves praise but lacks the ability to affirm others. Greed demands the most from others while giving the least. Greed is the father of misery.

Overcoming Greed

How does one defeat greed in their life and leadership?

  • Gratefulness. Determine to become a grateful person. Take inventory each day for all of the blessings in your life.
  • Tithing. It is one of the oldest principles of economy and spirituality. Tithing means to give back the first 10% of your income. It’s also a reminder that what you have is not yours. It all belongs to your Maker.
  • Break the chains. Break the cycle of greed in your life by doing something extraordinarily generous. And do it without anyone knowing.
  • Remember. Everything good in your life comes from God. Learn to trust him for your needs. Learn to trust him for your life. Learn to trust him for your eternity.
  • Affirm others. Dale Carnegie wrote: “In our interpersonal relations we should never forget that all our associates are human beings and hunger for appreciation. It is the legal tender that all souls enjoy.”

As the proverb says, greed robs you of life. Take a regular inventory of your soul and wherever you find the mold of greed, scrap it and burn it out of your life!
