An Overview of 1 Timothy 6

Generosity in Leadership

I’m surprised how few leadership talks address the issues surrounding money. I’m not talking about how to make more money. Plenty of talk about that. I’m not talking about investing money. Plenty of talk about that. I’m not talking about spending money. Plenty of talk about that. I’m talking about being generous with money.

Popular Studies Reveal Multiple Outcomes and Benefits of Generosity

  • Enhanced Well-Being
  • Improved Physical Health
  • Stronger Social Connections
  • Reduced Stress and Improved Mental Health
  • Positive Impact On Others
  • Increased Sense Of Purpose And Meaning

We shouldn’t give, to get, but that’s how it works. And every honest leader knows the difference between giving and giving generously. Generously is a big word. It’s not always a big number but it is always big to the person who gives generously. It’s never about equal gifts, it’s about equal sacrifice.

How to Become a Generous Leader

  • Develop Gratefulness and Contentment!

True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. (6-8)

It’s a proven fact. The more you consider what you have instead of what you don’t, the more peace you will experience. Contentment breeds moderation. Discontentment breeds anxiety. Ask yourself, how much is enough? Typically, the more you own, the more you must earn to satisfy the needs of what you own.

  • Run from Greed!

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from their true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. (10)

Money is not evil. The love of money cultivates lust. When does lust ever make our world a better place?

  • Learn to Trust the Giver, not the Gift!

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. (17)

Sometimes we forget that God has no shortages. He is the one who gave you your abilities, the one who provided the right relationships. He is a giver, not a taker.

  • Have Fun Blessing Others!

Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. (17-19)

When you give, have fun. Smile. Laugh. God loves a cheerful giver!
