A wise person thirsts for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash
A Christian Proverb

If you are a leader, you feed others with vision, values, and influence. You are the well where people gather to quench their thirst – to get affirmation and exhortation. To be encouraged and to receive direction. To be empowered.

You cannot do this effectively if you are dry. You have no fresh water, no new insights, no sustaining passion. Your energy is decreasing. You are becoming impatient. You unknowingly are reaching for some kind of convenient fix. Something to make you feel better. Shortcuts. You’re faking it or you’ve been reduced to just trying to get by. Your words have no power and your thoughts are scattered.

When your well is wet and filling up you have plenty to share. In fact, it just flows out of you. When you’re full of good and fresh water, it brings refreshment to those around you. You want to be a well full of life-giving water!

As a teacher, speaker, and leader, I must stay full. I cannot rely on my experience. I cannot rely on my skills. These are forms. They are containers. But what are the containers filled with? I can put together an outline for a speech without much difficulty but bringing life to the talk comes only from the overflow of my life. New experiences. New knowledge. And new water.

How do I keep my well full?

  • Make digging your well a priority. Many of us try to fit in time for ourselves instead of making it a priority.
  • Know what fills you up.
  • Reading is important for me. Reading biographies, history, Scripture, psychology, and leadership books fill me. I need time to write. Working with my hands is a break from what I normally do so that sometimes fills me. Serving others outside of my normal routine fills me. Inspirational movies move me and fill me.
  • Exercise. Our bodies were made to move. When our bodies move, the rest of our being seems to harmonize… if we stick to it!
  • Quiet. Sitting to ponder. To pray. To think.
  • Travel. Seeing new sites and experiencing different cultures will fill you and shape you.

This is not an exhaustive list. The important thing is to make sure you are taking in the world. Enjoying the handiwork of the creator. Let Him rain new water on you so that you can overflow into the lives of others.
