In our fast-paced and demanding world, making good decisions is crucial if you want to keep up. As a busy individual, you’re constantly bombarded with countless decisions that impact different areas of your life. From work to family and finances, it can be challenging to juggle everything and make the best use of your time and resources. However, the decisions you make today can significantly impact your tomorrow. Therefore, it’s essential to carefully consider your choices and their potential consequences. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of making good decisions, the impact they have on your time, and provide five examples of better questions to ask yourself when making decisions.
As a busy individual, you are constantly faced with decisions that impact different aspects of your life. From providing guidance to your team to supporting your family, managing finances, planning for the future, and keeping in touch with friends and neighbors, you have a lot on your plate. It’s no wonder that you’re always on the run, trying to make the best use of your time and resources.
To elaborate, the decisions you make in your daily life have a significant impact on how much time you have. Making good decisions is crucial because they can add valuable time to your life. As the saying goes, “measure twice, cut once.” This means that taking the time to make a good decision will ultimately save time in the long run. On the other hand, poor decisions can cause you to lose time because you will need to spend additional time correcting or redeeming regrettable choices. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your decisions and their potential consequences.
The decisions you make today create your tomorrows.
I have learned a valuable lesson about making good decisions and the practical wisdom through the mistakes of my strength. Despite being an activator who moves fast and gets things done, I am also very strategic in my thinking. However, these opposing qualities have caused me angst at times. The path to better decision-making is paved with better questions.
Here are five examples of better questions:
What decision do I need to make before I walk into the room where a decision will be desired?
(making certain decisions ahead of time will save you from making bad decisions under pressure)
What kind of person and leader will I be today and what behaviors will I practice?
(imagine and rehearse these behaviors in your mind)
If only one thing gets done today, what will it be and what must I do to see it happen?
(effective leaders will not allow fire alarms to derail the achievement of mission-critical objectives)
How might I feel about this decision tomorrow, next week, next year?
(the longer term you think, the better decisions you will make)
Is this the best use of my time? Is this in the best interest of my organization?
(what got you here will not get you there)
Making good decisions is a crucial aspect of our busy lives.
It can be challenging to balance all the different areas of our lives, but the decisions we make today have a significant impact on our tomorrow. As we’ve discussed, taking the time to make good decisions ultimately saves us time in the long run, while poor decisions can cause us to lose time. By carefully considering our choices and asking ourselves better questions, we can improve our decision-making skills and create better tomorrows.
Remember, the path to better decision-making is paved with better questions.
So, take the time to ask yourself the right questions, and make the best decisions possible for your life and organization.
