“Amateurs focus on outcomes. Professionals focus on process.”
– Dr. Eric Potterat

We all have goals. We may or may not write them down but we think about them. Let’s be real. Most of our goals are really more like wishes. We wish we were healthier. We wish we had more money. Or we wish we loved what we do. We wish our relationships were stronger. We wish we earned this degree or received that promotion. They are wishes because we don’t do anything about them.

How do you transform a wish into a goal and a goal into an accomplishment? The answer is not glamorous. Nor is it flashy. It’s about reflection, honesty, and integrity. It’s about planning. It is about discipline. It’s about resiliency. It’s about mental toughness.

TEN REASONS WHY WE QUIT

  • We quit because we never considered what accomplishing the goal might require
  • We quit because we like where we are more than where we want to go
  • We quit because we haven’t written down our goal
  • We quit because we haven’t written down our strategy for accomplishing the goal
  • We quit because our plan did not include concise steps to follow
  • We quit because our steps are not small enough
  • We quit because it’s harder than we thought it would be
  • We quit because we have not shared our goal with the right people
  • We quit because we have too many goals
  • We quit because we think failure means we can’t win

There are more than ten reasons why we don’t accomplish goals but the list above is the core of the issue. People who commit to the process accomplish more. People who schedule their behaviors on a calendar move in the right direction. Those who consider each scheduled behavior an important appointment see progress. People who experience progress already know the journey is hard and accept it. Those who accept hard become resilient. Resilience wins.
