4,000 years apart, yet the pain of deception remains timeless. In this week’s blog, we delve into the heart-wrenching tale of stolen blessings and shattered trust. Learn the truth and deception from Genesis 27. Embark on a journey of self-discovery, forgiveness, and the remarkable power of love’s redemption.

I’ve been reading and meditating through the book of Genesis. I’ve probably read this text more than all the others (other than Proverbs). This morning, I journeyed back to the time when Rebekah and her son Jacob deceived their beloved Issac and Esau. Isaac, the aged husband, and father. Esau is the older twin brother of Jacob. There’s plenty of family dysfunction laying the foundation for this terrible event. There’s competition, jealousy, favoritism, greed, and deception – not the recipe for success.

Mother and son literally stole what belonged to the other son. How it grieved the dying father and the swindled son. You can read the details for yourself in Genesis 27.

Truth and Deception

After reading and contemplating this event, I immediately brought my wife into the conversation. She was very familiar with the story. This event happened around 4000 years ago and we still mourn it today. Why?

Because we can relate. We have been deceived at some time in our lives. The pain is real. If you have never been deceived, lied about, cheated, or betrayed, you are an exception to the rule. The feeling is awful, never mind the damage done.

To make matters worse, guilt and possibly shame, belongs to some of us who have mistreated another. In some cases, you thought you were justified to do so only to learn later that you were wrong. Passion is a dangerous friend.

The history of betrayal is brutal.

Below are some of my thoughts while meditating on this story:

  1. Sins of deception can create enemies for life.
  2. What is better than living a life of faithfulness?
  3. Family is meant to be a place of safety.
  4. How can my past failures be redeemed and transformed into a life-giving character?
  5. How can I teach my family and those I influence about the power of love and truth?
  6. How can I inspire leaders to serve others?
  7. I need to pray blessings on those who have come against me.
