Marriage and Leadership

Life & Leadership Lesson: If you’re married or plan to marry, this relationship is central to your life. Next to your walk with God, it is the most important relationship. More than your kids, parents, siblings, or friends. Your marriage is your first priority. To be first, it must be central. A central priority penetrates and influences all other relationships and concerns of life. If you build a strong marriage, it will overflow into the rest of your life.

Make no mistake. I love my kids. I’m an engaging grandfather. I’m interested in and desire to be more involved in the lives of my extended family. My parents are my heroes. My friends are important to me. And my clients play a significant role in the fulfillment of my life’s purpose. With all that said, my energy and focus come from a healthy and supportive marriage.

Health Begins at Home

It is difficult to fight two battles at the same time. Usually, one front must be sacrificed, or both are lost. Health begins at home. Healthy leaders have more energy, endurance, and clarity of thought than those fighting two battles. So what does this mean?

Your priority is to be healthy. And so if you are in a significant relationship, it must be your priority. The energy that radiates from your most important relationship cannot be contained inside the walls of your home. You take it with you. That’s either good news or bad news. Here are a few questions to consider:

  • How much time did you spend with your spouse last week?
  • How much time did you invest listening to your spouse?
  • Does your spouse believe he/she is your highest priority?
  • When was the last time you asked your spouse how you could be a better partner?

In the end, your relationship will matter most.
