It’s not about you

The Purpose Driven Life is a book authored by Rick Warren. It has sold over 50 million copies and has been translated into 137 languages. The first four words in the book are: It’s not about you.

I was around the age of forty when I first read the book. The content was impactful, but in my opinion, nothing stood out more than those first four words. They struck me like an arrow at the center of my heart, and in that moment, they also released me from a heavy burden I had been carrying for years. It was a weight I had placed on myself—to prove something to myself and perhaps even seek validation from others.

Although I was raised in a Christian home and was already living what many would consider a “successful” life—happily married with two healthy children—I still needed to hear those words. I remember the moment as if it were yesterday. I opened the book, turned to chapter one, page one, and began reading. When my eyes landed on those four simple words, they struck me deeply. I looked up, staring into space, trying to process what I had just read.

BUT IT DOES INCLUDE YOU

More than two decades later, I will add these thoughts. It’s not about you, but it does include you. There is a purpose for everything and everyone. On this side of eternity, it is difficult to see purpose in everything. Sometimes it all feels like chaos, not purpose.

Here’s the good news. You don’t need to know everything or figure it all out to live a life of purpose. Purpose is powerful and life-giving. Defined, purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
