You’re facing a new year and you’re not happy about the last one. What can you do differently? Well, let’s start with something Clint Pies said on my podcast, the Today Counts Show, episode 90: Dealing with Difficult People.

“What you ignore becomes more and what you address becomes less.”

The most difficult person to lead is you. If you learn to lead yourself in a healthy and positive way, many (not all) will follow. When that happens, teams win, and winning feels great.

What do we ignore?

We ignore what’s hard. We ignore the truth when it is not pleasant. And we ignore the things that make us feel bad. We ignore things we don’t like to do. We ignore things we don’t want to hear. Lastly, we ignore what we don’t do well.

If we ignore, we take the path of least resistance, others who follow in our footsteps begin to do the same. In other words, we lead a team that ends in another losing season.

What you address becomes less.

Life itself is filled with challenges. Health, relationships, finances, etc. Leadership is the willingness to take on more responsibilities in spite of it all. It can be overwhelming. And when we are swimming against the current of all these demands, it’s easy to quit and head to shore.

What should you address?

Well-meaning leaders get tied up addressing everything that comes at them until they find a closet to hide in. Until they are burned out. Maybe your life feels out of control and when you think about new goals for the new year, you’re probably adding instead of simplifying.

Many make their loads heavier because they think “more” or “work harder” are two ingredients needed to turn things around. I would suggest the opposite. – More Next Time
