Getting your Soul in Shape for Leadership

In this article, we will delve into practical ways of creating a healthy soul and why it is essential for effective leadership. By intentionally shaping your soul through margin and mapping, you can make better decisions and lead successfully. Therefore, let’s explore how to get your soul in shape for leadership and become a better leader.

Last Monday, we delved into the inner workings of the soul, and it was truly fascinating. When we have a better understanding of how our soul functions, we can transform the way we process information, make decisions, and act with boldness and confidence.

Soul health is vitally important for all of us

By being consciously aware of your emotions, rationale, and behaviors, you will be better equipped to lead yourself and others effectively. Furthermore, soul health is crucial for all individuals, and it can be achieved through intentionality, which we will refer to as Soul Shaping.

Here’s how to begin:

1. Margin

Creating margin represents the time and space you need for rest, healing, and growth. Living at the mercy of your calendar’s demands can be harmful to your soul, so it’s important to engage your emotions, intellect, and willpower by intentionally setting aside essential margins in your calendar.

2. Mapping

To clarify, mapping is not just a general evaluation, but rather a process of deep evaluation and planning that happens within the margins you have created. During this time, you can reflect, check your compass or vital signs, and engage in what we at Lead Today call Playbook Construction.

My greatest concern for leaders today is the discipline required to work on important matters that are not urgent. Franklin Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) called this Quadrant 2 (Important but Non-Urgent). Things like relationships, spiritual development, exercise, planning, deep dives in general). Usually, most of us work from and are controlled by Quadrant 1 (Important and Urgent). However, the problem with Q1 is that it never shuts off. It is always demanding and has no idea you are human. Mapping or Playbook Construction is the science and discipline of making decisions ahead of time so that the fire alarms do not rule the day.
